Many people equate giftedness with high achievement in school, giving rise to the belief that "gifted children are going to be just fine on their own." However, many gifted children may come across as the least able students in a classroom. I developed the following handout as a way to explain why and how this happens and what teachers can do to prevent and reverse this underachievement. While the handout was originally intended to be used for professional development, this information is also helpful for parents, administrators, and even gifted children themselves. Clearly, teachers are only part of a larger system in which gifted children underachieve, and this handout seeks to empower teachers, not to blame them. If you'd like a downloadable PDF copy to use for educational purposes or for personal reference, please email me at giftedkidsmattertoo@gmail.com.
In the handout, Eric is a composite of a number of gifted underachievers I've known. In the comments section, I'd love to hear about any experiences you've had with gifted underachievers and whether/how they were able to get back on the right path.
